Atsushi carried medicine from village to village, then found a kimono sleeve hiding a hand-drawn map to a place no modern map recorded. While he kept taking paid room and board, he also kept ending his nights on a rooftop with Shiori, the company lawyer who watched his tired hands and said the things he would not. The closer they got, the harder it became to keep work, trust, and longing in separate boxes. Then the map, a sealed retirement-fund certificate, and a locked locker all started pointing the same way.
