Her father was the deputy factory director, her stepmother chaired the labor union, and they lived in the small white building reserved for cadres. Every day on her way to and from school, children of factory workers would wait just to catch a glimpse of her. Yet, she managed to ruin such a promising hand of cards. At seventeen, she was sent down to the countryside, fell in love with an educated youth, gave birth to an ungrateful child, and indulged in a life of excess that led to kidney failure...
