Norio woke in a broken castle and heard people like footsteps in the next room. That made him the best witness in the house, and the worst person to ignore, but most of the family still tried. A sealed prescription under a car seat gave him the first real clue, because it named the kind of treatment and the kind of secret work that went with it. He had no rank, only sharp eyes and a habit of caring for intruders as future neighbors. Every time he spoke up, someone higher in the room pushed back. He kept going anyway, because the old family name would stay buried unless the one voice nobody trusted could prove why the house had fallen in the first place.
