A child born on the stairs of East Street, where decadent noise drifts like daily life. Crouching in a closet, listening to screams, only crawling out after the guests leave to clean beneath their mother. To procure medicine for their mother, to avoid starving to death, to hold a funeral, the child’s body is traded. In the midst of this, the child meets a man who claims to be the butler of a count. “My master eagerly awaits your meeting.” I could never have dared to imagine golden slippers, a golden carriage, or a golden castle from a fairy tale, nor a splendid noble who helps a filthy prostitute without asking for anything in return…But I was thrilled.
