The story is one of the most compelling historical romance I have read. Xie Zheng and Chang Yu evolve through their pain and love and suffering. Chang Yu is the perfect balance for the deep dark Marquis. Their deep love is not only for each other, but encompasses near and dear ones. The best part is where Xie Zheng overcomes his ego, and hatred and drive for revenge and comes back to his love, and later on delivers justice, not revenge. The palace intrigue kindles keen interest in ancient Chinese customs, culture and history. One aspect puzzled me: both the hero and the heroine are in their prime, and it is a bit strange that the heroine, despite loving the hero, only endures the lovemaking and rarely enjoys or initiates it. This may be because according to societal culture, women are not supposed to enjoy it. The author may have faced this constraint. The last few chapters where they meet in an alternate setting was completely unnecessary
